Stronger Together – utilising the power of collaboration to deliver excellence in teaching and learning

Why this is leading practice

The collaboration is a proactive response to the changing educational landscape, inspiring excellence and furthering opportunity for all. Working together has made a real difference, continually improving the quality of teaching and learning, furthering aspirations amongst all members of the learning community and harnessing resources efficiently in the interest of excellent outcomes for all. The experience and expertise of the range of partners strengthens and enriches the collaboration, helping to raise the quality of provision.

Impact to date

1) All Trust schools are full/over-subscribed

2) Improved pupil attainment

3) Improved Ofsted gradings; All schools 'Good' or 'Outstanding'

4) Increased staff and parent confidence

5) Improved transition opportunities

6) High quality interventions shared after Review Days

7) Confident support network in place for all roles in school

8) Economies of scale re transport, photographers, resources and staff

Rationale / Start Point

The Trust comprises a group of high achieving schools with experienced Headteachers who were keen to learn from the strengths of each other, share excellent practice and work together to be the best they can be in order to provide the best possible life chances and education across the Trust. Engaging key partners to support the achievement of the vision was crucial, offering mutually beneficial opportunities in the pursuit of excellence in education and high aspirations for the whole learning community. The core co-operative values underpinning the partnership encourage the widest possible impact - self help, self responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, solidarity.

Key Strategies

1) School Review Days with 6 Head teachers visiting and assessing the 7th school in turn

2) Understanding each others' schools and 'affirmation they are on track'

3) Joint work on School Development Plans

4) Joint work on School Evaluation Forms

5) Joint work on NQT and ITT students

6) Joint planning and moderation meetings to confirm findings

7) Acting as Critical Friends and respecting each others opinion

8) Joint Professional Development for all roles in school

9) Full backing of Governors, parents and staff

10) Collaborative work on assessments

11) Pupil visits to other schools for teamwork and Trust value workshops

12) A collaboration policy drawn up and shared

13) Sharing best practice, taking aspects from each others schools and 'tweaking' them to suit their own

Sustainability and Further Development

There are already plans to increase the amount of collaboration work to include joint teacher training days, joint governor training, Special Needs provision, co-ordinator meetings and administration and premises manager meetings to meet and share best practice.

Joint working parties set up to work on common policies and curriculum changes and sharing this work not only with Trust schools but other schools across Birmingham who made need help. The Trust will also help other schools set up Trusts of their own.

The Trust is also looking at setting up a Resource Hub, sharing resources, ideas and staff as well as setting up a Trust Pupil Council made up of pupils from each of the Trust schools.
