Embedding a successful creative provision for pupils with complex additional needs through a multi-sensory approach.

Why this is leading practice

Centred around the use of our Sensory Drama Studio, Brays School’s creative curriculum cycle, consisting of 24 distinct themes, has successfully raised pupil’s attainment, maintained focus on learning and made experiences relevant and meaningful for all our pupils.
Our focus now has been in developing a program of workshops, sessions and activities focused on embedding this creative approach to teaching and learning, giving all staff the skills and strategies needed to run successful Sensory Drama sessions and also understand the importance and impact of raising standards and progress across the school using a creative approach.

Impact to date

 The schools' aim is to make the life of the pupils at Brays to 'be the best that it can be'. The development of pre-learning skills leads to pupils being more motivated, have increased focus, form better relationships and learn to help each other. The use of the studio has brought the outside world to the pupils and there is evidence that their anxieties are reduced as they anticipate their latest journey, with passports and visas to a rain forest, outer space, Australia, Peru or the inner body. As the head says, 'it makes absolute sense for our pupils'. Parental engagement has increased, visiting the school to see assemblies and work produced in the studio.The confidence of the teaching and support staff has also been increased.

Rationale / Start Point

Our creative approach to the curriculum has been successful, evidenced through our assessment, recording and monitoring, it is also assessed by external agencies (Ofsted, DFE, ArtsMark, LAA) However, we are most proud of our ‘wow’ moments, the opportunities for deep engagement and interaction with our children.
To take advantage of our investment in the resources, planning and approaches needed to succeed we devised a series of workshops and practical sessions, some focused on strategies for running successful Sensory Drama Studio sessions, others focused on the use of music, storytelling and visual arts, the workshops involve every adult and child.

Key Strategies

 With difficulties in taking the children out to visit the world, the school brings the world to the school.
They still aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, through a revolutionised creative curriculum, built on themes across half a term. TA’s, teachers and pupils dress up and perform as characters making the experience feel real. The sensory drama studio is central to this work. The use of lighting and sound effects further enhance the work being done.

 

Sustainability and Further Development

  • The team have already created a similar multi-sensory room at Tile Cross School and hold joint school CPD sessions to cascade ideas, ensuring that pupils on both sites have the opportunity to experience the 'wow' lessons. 
  • Approach more local businesses for resources to further enhance the provision in the studio.
  • Further increase parental engagement during lunchtime, pool-time and playtime as well as concerts.
